A ratio compares quantities in a stated order. For example, red:blue = 2:3 means there are 2 equal parts of red for every 3 equal parts of blue. The numbers describe relative parts, not necessarily the actual quantities.

First convert the quantities to compatible units. Then divide every part by a common factor. For a whole-number ratio, using the highest common factor reaches simplest form in one step. Check that no factor greater than 1 divides every remaining part.

Add all ratio parts, divide the total by that sum to find one part, and multiply by each ratio number. Keep the shares in the original order. Finally, add them together to confirm that they reproduce the total amount.

Add the ratio parts to find the total number of parts. In the ratio 2:3, there are 5 parts altogether, so the first quantity is 2/5 of the total and the second is 3/5. The fraction denominator is the total parts.
