What are the colours of the rainbow in order?
What are the colors of the rainbow in order?
One of the best ways to remember things especially long things which you have to remember in the correct order is using something called a ‘mnemonic’.
A mnemonic is often a group of letters which represent one word each.
So for example if you want to remember the phrase “Plants breath carbon dioxide and humans breath oxygen”, you can make a mnemonic like:
PBCDAHBO
So the “P” stands for ‘plants”, the “B” for breath the “C” for carbon dioxide and so on.
So often people remember the colours of the rainbow using the following mnemonic.
“ROY G BIV”
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.
There is also another older mnemonic to remember the colours of the rainbow in order which is:
“Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain”
‘In vain’ means when something did not succeed or work. For example we say “I tried hard but it was all in vain, it didn’t work.” In other words Richard of York lost the battle.
So remember when you want to memorise the colours of the rainbow or know how many English-speakers learn the order of the rainbow colours, you can use the mnemonic, ROY G BIV!
