Part of speech/ type of word: Abnormal is an adjective.
Meaning:
Very different to what is normal.
It is generally negative, but can sometimes be used in a positive context but indicates something is strange and unusual.
Examples:
- His rude behaviour that day is not typical and he was behaving abnormally. Usually he is very polite.
- She had abnormal levels of sodium in her body due to her consuming too much salty liquids.
- When further investigation and analysis was carried out in to the results a number of abnormalities were found.
- Due to a government neglect the area suffered from an abnormally high level of crime.
