10 January 202410 January 2024 Windsor Castle is one of the most famous and historic castles in the United Kingdom. It is located in the county of Berkshire, just west of London. The castle has a rich history and is a popular tourist attraction. Windsor Castle was built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. William was the Duke of Normandy who conquered England in 1066. After he conquered England he established the basis of the modern English state. When the castle was built it was not meant as a place of residence for the king, but it was meant to be used for military purposes including keeping an eye over the newly conquered English or Anglo-Saxon natives of the land by their new ruling elite from northern France. However that changed when Henry I decided to start using it as a place in which he would live amongst other castles. Over the centuries, the castle has been the residence of many monarchs, making it the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. Today, it serves as an official residence of King Charles III. In addition to being a place for the English monarch to live in it is now also used to host ceremonies and events including international guests from abroad. The family name of the English royal family used to be Saxe-Coburg-Gotha but was changed to ‘Windsor’ during the first world war, as the previous family name was considered to be ‘too German’ and therefore it was felt that it was wiser to drop this name at a time of great popular hostility to all things German. Their new surname was connected to Windsor castle thus showing the importance of this building to the royal family and their identity. Tourists can go to Windsor from London in a number of different ways including train and buses. The trains from London can be as little as just over 20 minutes. It is said that it would take the average visitor between two to three hours to see the castle properly. Here are eight statements about Windsor Castle.
