Pizza Pizza is eaten all the world over. Every single day millions of people lovingly devour this highly popular food. What are its origins though? Pizza in its modern form is said to have come from southern Italy, to be specific, from the city of Naples. The man who many say 'invented' Pizza is Raffaele Esposito in 1889, when that year the King of Italy, Umberto I visited Naples and 'pizza' was cooked for him. However other forms of flat bread predate Esposito's version of Pizza. In fact bread has existed for centuries. Mankind grew crops such as corn and rice and bread was made from corn. Historians say that bread first emerged in 8,000 BC in ancient Egypt. Naturally there was also flat bread and flat breads have been known to have been cooked for thousands of years. Once you get flat bread it is only natural to make it more tasty by adding different ingredients on top just as you do with a modern pizza. Even the ancient Italians had their form of 'pizza' or flat-bread with toppings in a food known as 'Foccacia'. Centuries afterwards Italians kept on cooking different types of flat bread until Espositio in 1889. However what was different about the city of Naples was the use of tomatoes on the flat bread toppings. This started off a few centuries before Esposito. In addition to the modern Italian version of Pizza there are other forms of flat-bread with toppings such as Lahmacun (derived from Arabic meaning 'meat with dough') and there are other dishes such as Pastrami and Baba Ganoush. Pizza is a very convenient dish to eat and is often ordered over the phone and then delivered home. Many university students have memories of surviving their university years by lots of nights of eating pizza. Other forms of flat bread existed before modern pizza. True.
