Real-Life Graphs in Four Moves

1

Check

Read both axes, scales and units.

2

Read

Identify or estimate the required graph value.

3

Interpret

Describe trends, slopes, flat sections or changes in context.

4

Explain

Use the real-life meaning of the graph to justify the answer.

What You’ll Learn

Read Graph Axes

Identify independent and dependent variables.

Interpret Distance-Time Graphs

Recognise faster movement and stationary periods.

Interpret Speed-Time Graphs

Recognise acceleration and deceleration.

Use Conversion and Linear Graphs

Read relationships between units, pay, fares and costs.

Spot Trends and Misleading Scales

Describe changes and check whether a graph is presented fairly.

Key Rules

The horizontal axis (x-axis) usually shows the independent variable, such as time.

The vertical axis (y-axis) usually shows the dependent variable, such as distance or cost.

Worked Proof: Real-Life Graphs

Real-Life Applications

Graphs are used in transport, weather forecasting, economics, sports analysis, healthcare and scientific research.

More Worked Examples

1

A distance-time graph shows that a traveller has covered 120 km after 3 hours.

Distance = 120 km

Time = 3 hours
Speed =120/3
= 40 km/h

3

A distance-time graph is horizontal between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm.

Stationary time=2:30 pm−2:00 pm
=30 minutes

Change in distance=0
Speed=Change in distance/Time
=0/0.50m
=0 km/h

3

A speed-time graph rises from 10 m/s to 25 m/s.

Change in speed=Final speed−Initial speed

=25−10
=15 m/s
Because the speed increases by 15 m/s, the graph has an upward slope.

4

A currency conversion graph shows that £30 corresponds to €36.

£1= €36÷30= €1.20

Therefore:
£50 = 50×€1.20
= €60

Frequently Asked Questions

They show how meaningful real-world quantities change in relation to one another.

It means the object is accelerating.

They show relationships between two units.

A scale can affect how changes look and may lead to misleading interpretations.

Use the axes, units, values, trends and real-life context.
